Deep fryer

I think (or DH does) that we would like to get a fryer. When i was a kid we always had one and I can vividly remember the whole house stinking of chips. However, I quite like the idea of the ones that use very little oil (so I can chuck it out rather than have to store it in the fryer)and I think if i have it I will be more likely to do things like pakoras etc.
Anyone have any experience of a good one?

DH has friends with a fryer and I can always tell instantly if he's been in their house by the lingering smell in his clothes, yuck! That would put me off having one, though I don't know if the kind you mentioned are less smelly

I was looking at the actifry, or whatever it's called that only uses a tablespoon (or was it 3) of oil, but then i read somewhere that chips take about 40 mins to cook. Do you know if that's right?
