Vacumn Cleaner or Carpet Cleaner?

Should I get a Vac Cleaner or Carpet cleaner for carpeted floors?

1/3 of the house has wood floors and the rest carpeted. Any advise would be appreciated, along with what brands you would recommend.

I have a Dyson and love it - plus the customer service was brilliant too with the 2 year warranty.

Then I hire a rugdoctor from Morrisons once a year for a proper shampoo/clean which even works on the cream carpets we inherited and isn't too pricey.

My mum had a hoover carpet cleaner which was okay but hard work compared with the rugdoctor.
