Why don't homemade curtains hang straight? Any help appreciated!

I have long curtains at our patio doors that I made a couple of years ago (doors are too long for ready-made ones) and they kind of flare out/flip over down the sides so you can see the linings.

I'm in the process of taking them down to sew the linings into them properly (never got round to this and hoping it'll help - or at least look neater when they show) but if there's anything else I can do at the same time then that'd be great!

Any ideas from clever and more experienced curtain makers out there???

weights in the hems?

Swe some weights into the hems too.I have had to blow dry curtains with a hot hairdryer in the past top fold them back and stop the lining showing. This was work related though I am not mad!

Oooh, ok thanks, how many weights do you need and where do you get them from - or could I use coppers?

Did the blow drying help too? They're quite a heavy fabric if that makes a difference.

Any good fabric/haberdashery type of place should sell the weights.

You can buy some by the metre and put these in the hem at the bottom, or individual ones IIRC.

Just to give you an idea of what you're looking for:

weighting tape

Curtain weights

Sometimes they hang like that because the side seams are little bit too tight. You can get a stitch cutter and cut one in every 10, then pull the fabric straight.

Fantastic, thanks very much! Am slightly depressed that I've put up with wavy curtains for so long when it looks like there's such an easy solution!

Do you think its worth sewing them down the sides of the curtains as well as in the hem - I just looked on ebay and it says some of the weights are suitable for this and I'm trying to work out how many to buy.

Oh and should I put some along the length of the hems to even them out, or just at the corners?

Sorry, you can tell I'm completely clueless!

you can just use a 2p to weight the corners, rather than goiing out out to buy the weights.
