Washing Machine - NEEDS WASHING??

We have very hard water in our area, and so as to prevent limescale build up I want to run something through the machine. I've spoken to a Washing Machine repair man and he tried to sell me a super kind of Calgon for £20! I've not used Calgon, but is there anything kind of more natural and household that I could use? I've got buckets of Bicarbonate of soda which I used for cleaning drains etc.

Am now rambling, all help appreciated.

Try a diluted mix of white vinegar in a hot wash - obviously without any clothes in!
