How do I clean a rug? I don't think it's wool, maybe silk?

I've just bought a second hand rug for DDs room and it needs a good clean. I think it might be silk, not sure what it is TBH! It's eastern (maybe Iranian).

Any ideas?

I've got a steam cleaner and some vanish carpet stain remover, but what do I actually need to use/do?

This is it. I know it's a bit much, but the rest of the room is very simple. Wooden floor, white furniture, curtains and bedding, black blind, lilac walls.

Cheeky bump!

Am hoping to clean it this evening, I assume it'll take some time to dry...

tbh, if you don't know what it's made of I'd maybe take it to a dry cleaner.

MadameMoe · 14/12/2009 17:29

Really? What'd happen if I just used the hoover head shaped attachment of the steam cleaner with a cloth over it?

I have no idea ! But I guess if it's not colourfast the colours might run.

MadameMoe · 14/12/2009 18:31

mmm. I think I might just risk it, I payed 20 euros for it and it'd cost 50+ to have it dry cleaned...

So, assuming it's colourfast (which it may or may not actually be) what would be the best way to clean it?

TBH, with it being for a child's room, if I can't clean it myself it's not a lot of use to me. DDs potty trained so the worst sudocreme / shit smearing actions are behind us (I hope) but I think it's fair to assume it will get dirty again. I'd rather throw away 20 euros now buy risking cleaning it than have to pay 50 euros or more every six months to have it clean IYSWIM. Is that weird?

Nope. GO for it girlfriend! Let me know how you get on.

MadameMoe · 14/12/2009 20:15

The steam cleaner is warming as we speak...

Right, I'm off to do some work. Will check back in in an hour to find out if you are:

a. triumphant

or b. weeping quietly in a corner (in which case I will offer you a G&T and a manly pat on the back)

MadameMoe · 14/12/2009 21:17

a, triumphant (and sweaty). This is going to take aaaaagggggeeeeeesssss.

Still fancy a G&T though...
