Hurricane Lamps

Does anyone know how to clean a melted down pillar candle from a hurricane lamp?
It's there since last Christmas. And I suppose it's time to do something about it now.
What should I do to prevent it happening again?

Oven on very low - wait til its liquid and then pour out into bin, clean in hot soapy water
