Stinky carpet in dining room

DH vaxed the dining room carpet on Saturday afternoon. This morning, there was a distinct smell of damp carpet in there, which has worsened as the day has gone on. It is now pretty vile. This has never happened before, when he's used the vax (ie washed the carpet, rather than just hoovered it) I suspect what it needs is a good airing, but it's not really the weather for throwing open all the windows and the patio doors. Have had the heating on full blast to try to get it to dry quicker, but the smell has got stronger.

My parents and great aunt and uncle are coming to lunch tomorrow. Help!

could you hire one of those drier things they have on DIY programmes from a local tool hire place first thing tomorrow morning? I bet they're not that much for a day/half a day. That would surely do the trick?
