Any tips for keeping on top of a big(ish) house?

We have a reasonably big house by my standards (a perk of living in a bit of a dodgy area).

3 floors (so 2 lots of stairs), 4 double bedrooms (ours, babies, and 2 spares), bathroom, en suite & downstairs loo, living room, kitchen & utility room. All carpeted except bathrooms & kitchen. Very little built in storage.

I have a 6 month old baby, a husband who likes to change his clothes several times a day & a hairy dog.

Before DD came along I used to do limited surface cleaning, keep up with the washing and then do a massive blitz every other weekend.

Now I'm not getting the time for uninterrupted blitzing it is getting on top of me.

Any tips? Should I concentrate on a room or 2 per day or a job or 2 per day? Either way it will never all be done!

A good tip someone here gave me is to have multiple sets of cleaning equipment, kept at a central point on each floor, in housemaid's buckets. That way you can grab the cleaning bucket and do a quick go on a room when you just have 5 minutes.

I only do guest bedrooms before / after someone come to stay.
