Burnt smell from the toaster

Can anyone please help. A week ago I burnt some toast in the Dualit toaster and I cannot get rid of the smell. The kitchen still stinks of it and seems to be getting worse. Anyone had a similar problem.

Have you emptied the crumb tray and checked that there's nothing stuck to the elements?

I have emptied crumb tray and held it upside down but it still smells, SoupDragon. DD thinks house smells like old peoples home!

I thin kit's most likely something stuck on the element. Turning it upside down just drops more crumbs on the element which then burn.

As it happens I love the smell of burnt toast - there's something comforting about it
