Sorry to be away for so long, internet connection down a very long and draughty corridor at parents house.
It has not been a good halfterm.
DS1 BROKE HIS UPPER LEFT FEMUR FALLING OFF A BIKE.
He and I have been in hospital for a week after op to put a plate in his leg. We went to V. Good Irish hosp in Tullamore, but just happened to be 90mins drive from my parents house, and I had no transport to get backwards and forwards, so had to leave twins in care of aged grandma and my sister [who has three kids of her own and who then had to go back to Dublin, etc etc). Then groundfloor of parents house for a 6 days with no access to outside due to multiple steep steps..
Anyway we are all back home now, and I need to take Ds1 to the fracture clinic to follow up from Irish hosp. He can't put any weight on the bad leg for 12 weeks, so I don't think he'll be back to school for at least 4 weeks, if then.
As usual, I am just thankful that he did not break his neck, and for the kindness of everyone who helped in Eire, my sis and mother and brother esp, and a wonderful team at hosp.
And it's lovely to be home (except we don't have a downstairs loo [BAH!]
Friends are all offering help so may need to take them up on it
Anyway it's nice to see you all

Knickers0nMaHead · 09/11/2009 09:13

Oh no Swan, what a nightmare! Hope he is feeling ok.

Simply · 09/11/2009 09:19

Morning everyone.

Thanks for the thread scatty.

Sorry to hear about your ds' broken bone swan. My ds broke part of his knee a couple of years ago. It's only a little thing but do you have one of those limb protectors so that he can shower and bath without worrying about getting the plaster (or whatever) wet? We got a leaflet giving details about the company from the hospital and I had to measure ds in order to order the exact size in order to get a good, comfortable fit. I can relate to the childcare and accommodation scenario btw. That was similar to my situation when my kids were little and I had a close relative in hospital.

Right. I'm going to finish putting the washing up away and then I'm going to get showered and dressed. Or perhaps I won't and I'll go swimming later. Hmmmmm. Choices, choices!

TeaMonster · 09/11/2009 09:21

Oh Swan Poor DS1. I am so glad that he is OK. Boys are such a worry. Good to have you back

I am on my own today, well MrMad has gone back to work. So I am going to have a quick tidy and then cuddles DS2, who is full of goo and not well at all.

In between him and me I got no sleep at all

Simply · 09/11/2009 12:23

Tea Sorry to hear that you and your ds2 didn't get to sleep last night. I hope your day and tonight are better for you.

Ooops. I'm being distracted by Bon Jovi singing on the tv. Apols!

scattyspice · 09/11/2009 12:33

poor you and ds1 swan! That boy is accident prone. Can he get up/down stairs on his bum (if difficult with crutches)? Also if it helps (to get out a bit) you can hire a w/ch from Red Cross for a small price (not sure how much) per week, our patients do this. Another tip (from one of our patients) is to pee in a coffee jar (large one with wide neck), screw the lid on until it can be emptied (useful at night to save hopping to toilet or to save doing stairs during the day). Also cycling gloves (fingerless with padding on palm of hand) make using crutches more comfortable. Is he in much pain?

Hi Knickers - what veg are you planting?
Hi Tea - hope DS picks up.
Hi simply - have a good swim (if you decide).

List:
get petrol
house bleugh
laundry
whats for tea

OP posts:
Simply · 09/11/2009 14:59

scatty has reminded me that ds found the crutches uncomfortable to use. I think he might well have used fingerless gloves.

I might go swimming tonight if I can get tea out of the way and dd sorted. I have printed off a copy of the swimming timetable for this week for dd and I as an incentive to go regularly and get the benefit from our membership.

Last mention of the free 2010 diary I have going spare before I pop it into the charity shop bag. I'm happy to pay postage. (I hope no-one here lives in Outer Mongolia though!)

Off to do some ironing. Back later!

swanriver · 09/11/2009 15:07

Back from hosp. Unfortunately no appt at fracture clinic to see specialist orthopaedics till Thurs, but A & E (the only way to get into system took an Xray and reassured me that it was healing. Felt a bt stressed not to see someone in Ortho but apparently that's the way it's done.
Thanks for input Scatty - my brother broke his leg two years ago and said a large plastic milk carton was invaluable, so that's what we've been using .
Ds1 can't use crutches only zmmer frame, so stairs are out. we've brought a neighbour's wheelchair from Eire. Went on bus with it today and it was easy(only doesn't have brakes)but needs to be replaced with safer version.
We've had a nice day really, lunch in hosp cafe (we love that cafe)Saltbeef sandwiches, then a few craft books and cds to tide us over next few weeks from highstreet on way home.

TM glad op went well from my brief scanning of threads, hope all is on the mend, but you sound still worn out. It is so hard juggling recovery with childcare. Had my first taste of insomnia waiting for ds's big op on 29th Oct, lying in hospital unable to sleep at all, just worry worry worrying. The next day I was complete wreck, so I now have an inkling of how awful Insomnia must be for you and Grouchy.

Tomorrow I have an minor op. Dh is helping for three days; not good timing, but it is all booked so I think I am just sticking with it.

Scatty, I think you are doing a fantastic job. I think physiotherapists must have to put up with patients offloading all their negativity and pain day after day - it must be so wearing to help yet not get sucked down. You must be a saint, as well as having all the skill required to know all the stuff about muscles, bones etc.
Anyway physio in Ireland told me all sorts of amazing stuff, about how kids' bones need to be "pounded" as in running, jumping, falling, pushing. Swimming wasn't enough to make bones strong and healthy, they got stronger the more impact they got So it isn't possible to avoid exercise that might cause accidents, except possibly rugby....

Goodness, enough posting for another week!
Bb Friday

Swan you are so kind your post made me . I'm glad you and ds found the physios helpful (sometimes we are a bit bossy ). All my patients are (mostly elderly) people who've had a stroke so I won't pretend to know anything useful about fractures in kids. I hope its not too painful (and too boring) for him. Good luck with your surgery tomorrow. will you be staying overnight? Try and get some peace and quiet .

Ruby did you see the Armstrong and Miller sketch about examm invigilators? Very .

Friend called round after school (good excuse not to house bleugh). Try again tomorrow.
