How to remove a fishy smell from clothing...

I bought a second hand item of clothing which i washed and dried on the line, i went to iron it and it had a really strong fishy smell, I therefore r-washed it but it is still there just the same.

It is worse when it is being ironed but i am not happy to use the item until i can eradicate this smell!! any tips? i've heard baking soda may work but not always successfully.

vinegar in the washing machine instead of washing powder?

leave it soaking in fabric conditioner?

Maybe soak in a strong vinegar solution overnight then wash as normal with bio powder and rinse again? I do this with the nappy wraps otherwise they smell of wee. Seems to work for this.

ok complete novice here, how much vinegar to water? and wouldn't it then smell of vinegar? but i suppose thats better than how it smells now. its a real shame as its a lovely item goodness knows how it got to smell like that!! Thanks ladies for your tips.

I don't know about ratio if you soak, but for in the washing machine it's about a mug of vinegar, no powder. The smell of vinegar evaporates so it won't smell by the time it's dried.

White vinegar, not malt vinegar or you will end up smelling like a chip shop.
