bunk beds - a risky buisness?

Hello,

My toddler is coming up to 2 soon, and I'd love to get one of those ikea bunk bed solutions with empty play space for underneath. It would save so much space in my tiny appartment and be so much more fun for her to have her own play area in her room.

I'm just so worried about it being risky. How much is she at danger of falling out? I can't imagine sleeping well myself through fear of worrying!

Could i have some feedback from those of you that have used this solution. How was it? Have there been any accidents? What about later when they learn to go to the loo themselves. How easy is it for them to climb out in the dark at night without breaking a limb?!

Ds has one, I wouldn't have put him in such bed at that age.

As far as I know some bunkbeds' details specify they are not suitable for under 8s. Mine is in his since 4 and has been fine, just a couple of falls.

It sounds a bit young to be on the top imo, but I guess it depends on the child. ds1 went on top bunk aged 4.5ish iirc, so ds2 would've been about 2 when he took bottom bunk (they each had toddler beds before this).

THe ones in Ikea say not to be up high until age 6. DS1 went into his at about 3.6. I certainly wouldn't put a 2 year old in one though.

ds was 5.5 when he went on top bunk...it did suggest over six yrs.he has a big line of pillows next to the edge. he can now manage to go to the toilet during the night.

ds2 who is 2.5 has at the same time gone into bottom unk and he still regularly falls out...seems to enjoy lying sideways in bed.

i would put my 4 yo on top bunk (am thinking of getting bunks) but not my nearly 2yo, am only just considering having him in bottom bunk!

You can have it low down for when your DD is young, and then flip it when she's older.

There's a bed tent that you can get for it too

Thuka beds are goo,d you buy the basic bed and can add new 'modules' to it as they get older adn turn it into a midsleeper or a high bunk.

The age the HPA advise children go onto high bunks is 7 and I thought, midsleepers was 3.
As a rough guide, children who fall from a height higher than their head, should always go straight to casualty. (told to us on a first aid paediatric, ofsted approved course)

dd is 2.2 and still falls out of her normal single bed occasionally

The Ikea one is the one we had for DS1. He had it low at first then flipped around as he was older.

depends on how well she stays in bed now. DD1 was 4 when she went into top bunk, yet DS2 (DC5) was 2yrs old......he was much better at climbing than DD1 was, and I was calmer by then too
