Any ideas on what I am supposed to do about it other than keep the door shut to stop me smelling it?

Put it on while empty on a full cycle with a cup of vinegar in it, it cleans all the grease out of the pipes.

DH puts vinegar in ours from time to time. Seems to do the job.

Yes, vinegar or half a lemon.
