I have got mould in my bagless vacuum cleaner - how best to clean it?

Am annoyed as I told DP to empty it straight away if he ever hoovered up anything that wasn't completely dry and right at the centre of the mouldy patch is a bit of cooked onion so I can see he has ignored me

None of us have allergies in the house (and vacuum has a HEPA filter anyway) but I obviously want to get rid of it, what is the best way?

If its a dyson it can all be washed with water, its all made of plastic apart from the motor so totally safe to do so, was told by the dyson man. Don't know about other brands, best check the website for the manual.
