How bad is it to use Brillo or steel wire on a flat hob?

We have a flat glass hob.
For five years I have used washing up liquid with Brillo pads or steel wool to clean it.
With enough scrubbing, the rings always reappear. I can't tell that the rings have faded or that the surface is scratched.

But now I learn that I should never have used Brillo/steel wool. I should have used an expensive proprietary cleaning product and posh razor scraper thingie.

I don't think I'm going to change my habits now. But what damage do you think I've done? Also, I am being nagged to get specialist cleaner/scraper for the glass hob on the cooker at the Guides hut (I am on the maintenance committee). I am trying to decide if this is possibly truly necessary.

Thoughts?

We've always used a hob cleaner, but not an expensive one. Hob Brite.

I've never used a scraper, just cleaner and elbow grease. I find washing up liquid on a cloth or sponge is OK day to day, but I need the cleaner when there's been a spill or when it needs shining up.

BTW, a bottle of Hob Brite lasts ages.

I use Hob Brite too, you only need a bit

I did once clean an aluminium hood with a brillo pad, that was also a very bad idea

Thanks for replies.
I guess I'm most interested in whether at the Guide hut we NEED to make an effort to always use the HobBrite stuff, or wouldn't materials at hand )washing up liquid and a soft cloth with the occasional Brillo paid be okay).
