our front room carpet is only a few years old and i potty trained ds1 a few months back and he got alot of wee on the carpet but not poo. Have tried scrubbing the odd grey stains that it seems to have made on my biege/cream (!!) carpet but never worked so hired a rug doctor yesterday and it looks better but today it absolutely STINKS of wee! Seems to have made it worse. DH wont let me replace carpet so what can i do??Tried bicarb.

I was in Johnsons dry cleaners yesterday, and I noticed they had spray for getting rid of wee smells. I don't know if it is any good, but may help?

Bicarb of soda may help

water mixed with white vinegar will neutralise the smell.

have to admit i hesitated before posting because whenever i answer a thread on gh i reccomend white vinegar - am beginning to sound like i have a vinegar fetish! but it is a wonder product, i have a dog so that adds to the mix of usual living smells, carpets can end up quite, ahem, fragrant. i mix vinegar and water in my bissel carpet cleaner - house smells like a chippy until the carpet dries and then the vinegar smell disappears and it just smells clean and fresh.

not sure how it would work if you don't have a carpet cleaner - unless you know where the accidents were in which case you could flush the area with water and vinegar mix and then jump up and down on a thick towel to absorb the excess??

i do have a bissell but worried about making it worse. It still feels damp from 2 days ago!!

the bissel does leave carpets quite damp - i also have a dehumidifier which helps!

if you google bissel and vinegar you will see that lots of people swear by this for cleaning and deodorising carpets. obviously bissel do not recommend it and say it might damage your machine - mine is about 8 years old and i have used vinegar in it for at least 6 years.

maybe try a test patch? or if you know where the patches were just flush through and absorb excess moisture with towels.

make apply a water and soda bi carb solution, wait until the water has evaporated then vacuum the carpet and the smell should be gone.

mad4myboys · 28/08/2009 14:43

i did the vinegar earlier and it still smells! Perhaps not as bad but still smells! I have also already done the bicarb. We have company all over w/e aswell!!

second ceres about the white vinegar - in fact I just posted a new thread about it

PinkTulips · 28/08/2009 16:04

is there decent underlay under the carpet or is it possible the floorboard underneath got soaked with pee and are holding the smell... dd and ds1 have peed all over our upstairs carpets and they haven't held the smell at all (and dd's pee is very 'pungent' smelling) so i'd be concerned when you've tried so many methods and the smell is lingering.

mad4myboys · 28/08/2009 19:00

its a cement floor underneath. It was an expensive wool carpet (silly naive dh bought just before i had ds1!)

Im so bemused by it, it revolts me tbh aswell! Im mainly bothered as having guests all w/e but hopefully be able to keep windows open and shove them in garden! Really not nice for ds's playing on floor and ds2 crawling round.

oooh, wool yeah, you're screwed... the dc's wool nappy wraps still smell of pee and they haven't been used in well over a year and i've washed them repeatedly.

re-lanolising helped the most but guess that wouldn't work with a carpet
