cheapest gas & electricity provider?

this may seem like a stupid question, but where can I find out the best deal on gas & electricity providers? The only websites I can find are ones where you compare what you're paying now with what you COULD be paying if you switched. My problem is that we moved out of our flat 4 months ago and have been living with relatives (so no bills ) since then - we are moving into our new property next week so need to start from scratch.. so I have nothing to switch from....??

Could you ask the previous occupants how much they have been paying?

not a bad idea but we've had no contact with him & he's moved out already..

Phone up uswitch, we did that, and explain the situation. If it is any help, we have just changed to Eon from Southern Electric and saving £100 a month.
