futon company mattresses: reviews and are memory foam and latex hot at night?

I was tempted to call this "Help! No longer sleeping with DH" but figured that was a bit misleading.

Basically, we've a crap very firm sprung mattress that combined with a year of BF in bed, has done my back in. When I lie on my side, my hips and lower back ache. I'm now sleeping on our living room futon and finding my back is way better. But because it's a futon and has been folded, it's only comfy for one person so DH and I have been sleeping apart.

We're looking to buy a new mattress on a tight budget and are looking at the mattresses made by the futon company since we're pretty happy with their futons. We're leaning towards the deepsleep mattress because it's cheaper and because we're concerned that memory foam and latex might be hot at night (and DH is a oven). Has anyone tried these? Any thoughts? We live in north east scotland so can't get to the store to try one in person.

Or, any recommendations for other non-sprung mattresses?

I'll probably have to start another conversation about bed frames in a week or so too but while I'm here, has anyone tried the natural bed company in Sheffield? We like the kyoto frame from there (and like the price) and are wondering how the sprung slats are to sleep on.

We had a proper futon mattress from the futon company and it was great. It was like the ones you get for the settees, but designed for a bed.
They stopped making them and replaed them with the type you have linked to
When we needed to replace it we used this site
It is fab and they make them to order if your bed is an odd size.

Thanks JUPB! We will probably go with the futon company because I like the foam core rather than the traditional futon and they seem to have decent quality ones. Ordering online is really a gamble.

If you have an existing mattress that is OK - just really 'firm' and hard, then maybe it just needs a mattress topper popping on top of it. This will provide all the softness and comfort you are looking for. Furthermore, if you go for a naturally breathable feather mattress topper you won't get all hot on it either. This will end up being a lot cheaper option to getting a whole new mattress.

We've had a fairly cheapo memory foam mattress for about 4 years and both love it. DH is also very hot, but we don't roll together so he finds he's OK with it.

We've previously had a feather topper but I did find that a bit hot (although sooo comfy I never got out of bed!).

We've got a memory foam mattress and it's great, my back has been much better since we got it, and no problems with getting hot, (my DH is also like sleeping next to a radiator).

We've had latex mattersses on sprung and on unsrpung slats for about 13 years. We got a bigger bed after 10y and had to get a new mattress, but the 10yo one was still in perfect condition.

I have chronic back trouble, and find the latex mattress absolutely fantastic. BTW, when I've got a bad flare-up it also helps massively to sleep with a pillow between my knees.

I don't find latex too hot, but when I had a lie-down on memory foam in the shop, it was much more 'huggy' than latex, wrapped itself round me much more, and I think would have been warmer than latex.

Thanks everyone! We've gone with a latex mattress and a slatted bed base (our old mattress was not worth saving) although I like the look of the feather topper and might suggest one to DH for christmas.

Hi. Anyone wanting to buy a futon mattress beware. I bought one from the Futon Company and it is the worst product I have ever bought. It is so uncomfortable and I have not had a decent night's sleep on it since I have had it. It has caused me constant back problems and sleepless nights. I have had to buy a normal spring mattress and will never buy a Futon mattress again.

peachybums · 06/09/2010 21:45

I have never had any problems with ours but my mum bought one (shes going through the change) and she said she had to take hers off as it was like an oven in bed and put old matress back. I said it might be down to her condition (to which she scowled at me like she was going to stab me) she said it wasnt as she was fine with the other matress on.

Sleepysmurf · 22/05/2011 09:54

Sleeping comfort and firmness of the Futon company latex mattress are excellent! That is if you like a firm mattress.

However, there is a strong and persistent chemical smell even months after we have purchased the mattress. The producer said this is normal with latex products.

i would never buy anything from the futon company their customer service is disgusting and the products are even worse, the amount of faults i have had i would ask everyone not to purchase anything from them

Am thinking to buy a new firm mattress. Can anyone recommend (or not) this one from the futon company? www.futoncompany.co.uk/wooden-double-beds-kingsize-beds/mattresses/deepsleep-mattress-from-169-good-quality-mattress-comfortble-futon.html
They have a special offer on at the moment but I'm not sure that this is the mattress for me. My ideal mattress would be a Green Fibres organic latex and coir with sprung slats under, but that's a bit pricey.
