Vinegar as a descaler?

I use white vinegar in my washing but I've seen it used to descale kettles (probably Kim and Aggy). Does anyone do this and if so how?

Boil it up

rinse

boil up again

boil with water

rinse

voila

is great for cleaning windows and limescale off taps too
