How do you remove burnt on coffee deposits from a filter machine hot plate?

Our machine is meant to stop filtering when the jug is removed from the hot plate but doesn't and DH doesn't always have the patience to wait until the jug is full. The drips have burnt onto the hot plate and I haven't been able to remove them. Any ideas?

Anyone know?
