How to clean curtains and blinds

I have to take down some curtains and a roman blind while building work is done. What is the best way to clean them, have dry cleaned curtains before but it is not cheap. How can I clean the blind? Most will not be reused, is there much demand for 2nd hand curtains or should I just freecycle them?
I could reuse one pair but they will need altering, anyone got any idea who I should approach for that kind of job?

I always wash my curtains on a delicate cycle and hang them on the line, I then iron them when they are still slightly damp and hang them back up (then any remaining creases will drop).
As for the roman blinds, gentle wash in the bath is always good.
