need to replace a two-pin plug but NO IDEA! Please help!

I need to replace a very old german two-pin plug - do I just cut it off? Will the wires be ok to wire into a 3 pin plug? Can't believe I don't know, it's a bit lame but I have no idea

Bumping as I'd like to know about this too as I have a French plug on an uplighter I'd like to sort out.

You will need to cut the cable unless you can open up the existing plug. After that follow these instructions on how to wire a plug.

But is it just wiring a plug or is it likely to be different because it's a foreign cable? would they be different voltages for example? the two pin plug only has two wires, and as far as I remember, the British ones still have three wires...

My dad's an engineer, and he told me that wiring colours and voltage are now standard across the EU. So just cut off the plug (which will be moulded) and wire the two wires as usual into a UK plug. (Brown right, blue left).

I can't remember what continentals do about the earth (third wire), but you probably won't need to know that.

No- but I am curious to know what it is ?.

Custardo, in the UK they are usually shaver adaptors for sale, and only 1 amp, so not always of use.

The electrical technology hasn't changed in 30 years so you should be fine if the machine is in good repair.

It's a sewing machine, nothing more exciting I'm afraid! Custardo - you're right about the adaptor but the only one I could find in my hovel lovely home was too loose. I know I have another somewhere under a mountain of crap filed away carefully but not sure where and as my organisational skills are unlikely to change I'd like to bypass the hunting for an adaptor problem each time I want to use it!
