Any suggestions for a carpet shampooer?

I am a childminder and regularly need to shampoo my carpets. That does not mean I regularly shampoo... but I should!

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive and effective carpet cleaner for me? My carpets are not happy at all.

If you can afford it, the Bissells are really very good and very robust machines. It's quite shocking how filthy the water is when you empty them out!!

(Which reminds me, I really should do the living room carpet again, I cleaned up a spill, and you can see the clean patch )
