White vinegar is not available from Ocado - do you need to buy from a hardware store rather than a supermarket?

I'm amazed! Maybe it has to be wine vinegar to be available from Twatrose Ocado.

Any supermarket will sell white vinegar - it's the basis for making pickles, isn't it?

Podrick · 27/05/2009 09:11

You're right - white wine vinegar is available

Serves me right for ditching Tesco then

I get it from my local greengrocers - they've managed to get 5 litre bottles of it for me recently. Always worth cultivating local stores!

nannyL · 27/05/2009 21:53

they DO sell white vingear (plain and boring stuff)

here

ipanemagirl · 28/05/2009 15:12

lol "twatrose"

terramum · 28/05/2009 15:27

Yes they do:

...but it does work out v expensive buying these little bottles. Do you have a grocer or deli type shop locally? Most of these tend to stock larger bottles for pickling. We get ours in 5l bottles from a local farm shop.

ProfYaffle · 28/05/2009 15:30

I get mine in Tesco and Morrisons, only small bottles though. Local grocer used to sell huuuuge tubs of 'non brewed condiment' so I stayed away from that

PuppyMonkey · 28/05/2009 15:44

This is the site for you: here

ipanemagirl · 28/05/2009 15:52

I want to know where to buy bigger bottles too. Maybe the green thread here might suggest ideas. not sure where it is!

ProfYaffle · 28/05/2009 15:56

I've seen it mail order in a few places but postage has always been too expensive to make it worthwhile.

Podrick · 28/05/2009 17:09

puppymonkey £13.00 for 500ml white vinegar???

terramum & nannyl I thought malt vinegar was the brown stuff at chip shops?

OP posts:
ProfYaffle · 28/05/2009 17:12

Malt vinegar is, yes, it's distilled malt vinegar in the link aka white vinegar.

PuppyMonkey · 28/05/2009 17:40

No, no Podrick, £13 for six bottles of white vinegar.

DentArthurDent · 28/05/2009 18:19

I got a large container of it cheap - about £2 for 3 litres from the local fishmonger.

terramum · 28/05/2009 18:28

Like ProfYaffle said is the distilled stuff you are looking for as that's what makes it clear (aka 'white vinegar')

Wikipedia page on vinegar:

"Distilled vinegar
Any type of vinegar may be distilled to produce a colourless solution of about 5% to 8% acetic acid in water. This is variously known as distilled, spirit or white vinegar, and is used for medicinal, laboratory and cleaning purposes as well as in cooking, including pickling. The most common starting material, due to its low cost, is malt vinegar."

Podrick · 29/05/2009 18:16

Aaaah it is all clear now - thanks very much for all the enlightenment !!!
