How do I get wax off terracotta tiles?

The floor of our new house has dark marks on it. We think that the previous tenants used the same floor cleaning fluid for the wooden flooring as for the the terracotta tiles, leading to a build up of the wax.

I have discovered that scrubbing the tiles then using a scraper gets the marks off but does anyone know of a better (less knee and manicure destroying) way?

I've never tried it on the floor... but how about

  1. put a piece of white paper down on the marks
  2. iron the paper

Heat from the iron melts the wax and the paper absorbs it.

In theory...

iron and blotting paper for candle wax

dunno if it will work on waxy build up on tiles

pretty sure it will be hard on the knees as well
