I usually let them stay up to say hello nd then send them up to bed .

But if you want to start proceedings early ..say 7pm .Ds doesn't nromallygo till 8pm on weekend.

I do the same. Say hello, few minutes of sociability, and then put the kids to bed. Mine go down easily though. If bedtimes were tricky, I might want them asleep before guests arrived. Or I'd just send DH up there and crack open the wine with our guests

Kids get to enjoy drinks and nibbles with us, then go off to bed.

well mine are small(ish) so they tend to get chucked in bed a bit early if necessary. otherwise they get all excited at people being there and just are a nightmare to get to bed, plus I Have to do all the getting them to bed instead of beign with guests.

no idea what to do when yhey're older though

personally I like to have a nice red wine with dinner but if you are going to serve kids then I would add a slice of lime.
