I have always just used an old shirt of DH's, cut the collar off and rolled up the sleeves and put it on backwards.

Maybe you could use a shirt as a template?

now that is a very very very good idea! dh has been retiring some shirts recently so i will bear that in mind in future! thanks for the tip!!

Oh yes - I did this...

Old shirt
Take off buttons - replace with velcro
Cut of collar and make 'rounded neck'
Cut off cuffs - turn up material inside, sew, leaving a gap to thread elastic round (rolled up sleeves or cuffs always dangle in paint or knock over water pots...)

If it's for use at school then sew a loop of ribbon in to hang up.

Voila!

For years I worked at a Playgroup and always made all the painting and craft coveralls. I did exactly what ReigateMum did depending on the fabric some lasted for years. We once had a load of old firemans shirts given to us they were really good thick material and so strong.
