New vacuum cleaner

Can anyone recommend a good vacuum cleaner which will last more than a year or so? We have had a Dyson and more recently a Hoover which has just had its day. We have carpets and am looking for something not too heavy.

Do you want an upright or a cylinder? We have a cylinder Miele, it's about 8 years old now and survived building work in the house and normal day to day use. My mum and brother have both bought the same one following our recommendation and are very happy with it too.

Thanks for replies. We've always had uprights but always wondered what a cylinder would be like on carpet. Any views?

flippineck, which miele have you got? I quite like the idea of getting a miele. I have hard floors and dogs so didn't know whether to get the pet one?

mummyandbaby, i have always used a cylinder when i had carpets, i don't like uprights, i always had henrys.

Sorry I didn't make it back earlier. I prefer using cylinders to uprights, I just think they're more flexible, and better for getting under furniture (hell, even vacuuming the furniture!).

We don't have the pet Miele. Not sure what model ours is but I think it was somewhere near the bottom of the range when we bought it. Looking at the curret range, it looks similar to the S380. We only have hard floors in the kitchen and bathroom, and it seems to cope equally well with carpet and lino. It's also great fro doing the inside of the car!

Thanks

Think that will be my next buy, but i have so many things to spend money on at the moment it might have to wait abit!
