Washing machines- which one to get?

jimblejambles · 21/04/2009 15:52

I need a new washing machine as mine won't wash towels, bedding or anything else thats heavy.
What do I need to look for? There are so many spin speeds etc.
I know I need to get one with a large capacity so I can stop relying on my mum to wash my towels and sheets.
So has anyone got any recommendations please?

I got the John Lewis own brand one and so far its been really good and a reasonable price too. There is some sort of website that compares them all and I think I got the recommendation for that one from there or possibly even from researching on mumsnet!

You can join which online as a trial for 30 days... But if you do cancel it, be sure and cancel it on time!

I did this, got the information and cancelled

I got a Bosch which is good, but kinda wish I got the Miele.

I have a miele and it is fab....copes with anything from your best silk undies to pillows and king sized bedding. It has an express wash and a pillow cycle, both of which I find useful. HTH.

Miele machines are fantastic and last forever, I know of several in there teens. They are more expensive than most other machines but considering they are more energy efficient and live longer they work out cheaper in the long run.

As far as spin speed goes IME it's best to go for a machine with variable speed and the highst top speed you can afford. It saves loads of drying time (and money too, if you use a tumble dryer)

...in their teens...

I've got the John Lewis one recommended by Which, so good I got their own brand tumble drier when mine packed in! We do a lot of heavy washing and it is great, quite a bit cheaper than the Miele

Miele...excellent.....

I've got an AEG (German like the Miele). Bought in 1993 and still going strong and I average about 5 loads a week. It had 1 new motor thingy (about £60) about 3 or 4 years ago and that's the only problem I've ever had with it. So for me I'd definitely buy another AEG (or perhaps a Miele as they have the build quality too).
I've a feeling that John Lewis appliances might be unbadged German stuff, although which brand escapes me...

Winetimeisfinetime · 21/04/2009 17:54

I had a fab AEG too which lasted really well but I don't think they are the same any more since the link with Electrolux.
I had a Bosch after the AEG which was dreadful and only lasted 18 months { similar story with a Bosch dishwasher } and now have a Miele which I am very happy with.

Yet another vote for Miele...worth the investment.

AEG and Miele last ages. I recently had to replace my AEG (after many years of hard use, 4 boys' school uniforms, sports stuff etc and 2 house moves) and financial constraints meant I couldn't stretch to an AEG this time so got a Zanussi - it's good but boy is it noisy in comparison! If you have the money, go for the most refined you can get!
