Carpet cleaning machines

Has anyone ever bought or rented one of those Rug Doctor machines (or equiv)? Are they any good? I have a light coloured lounge carpet and there are a couple of places that desperately need cleaning....its gone past the stage of 1001!! Any tips / recommendations?

Hi , i rented one from Morrisions and it was good but not as good as geting someone in, they are heavy to use and although i could see lots of black water coming out (we have pets!) so obviously cleaning the result wasn't great. I figured by spending around £20 more i could get someone in and have the job done quicker.

I think they are great for a general freshen up but perhaps not for ground in dirt or stains as such.
