Carbon monoxide alarms

I need to get/install our first CO alarm, and am researching today but please allow me to ask you some questions....

Do they have to be in a particular place, or is the landing okay?

Do you have CO and smoke alarms next to each other and does it look a bit cluttered? (i.e. shall I pay more for the one that is combined to save ceiling space?!)

Important consideration I know, in the scheme of things

Thanks ladies! Safety first!

Our C Monoxide alarm is in the same room as the boiler. (so if there was a leak it would be in this room first and we'd know about it I hope. Ours doesn't go on the ceiling. it's a plug in one.

We've tucked it away so you can't really see it but it'll be able to pick up any fumes.

The smoke alalrms are on the landings and hall.

Do we have to get one for the room with the fire and hob too, then? I thought one on the landing might be enough? [small house emoticon]

I don't know sorry...!

Have you got a gas fire ? If you use it I would say safer to get one near the fire too. Perhaps one upstairs and one down too.

We have the ones with dual function, CO and fire alarm in one. Came with clear instructions where and how to mount them i.e not into corners, not too close to windows etc.

I have one near the boiler so if there is a leak it doesn't get into the rest of the house. Ear piercingly loud. Our smoke alarm is in the hall (ie nowhere near the CO2 one). We don't have a gas fire but if we did I would be tempted to put one near that too. We got ours from British Gas, freestanding one and they were the best price.

We have one with the boiler, one in the next room and a portable one for holidays.

FlyMeToDunoon · 17/04/2009 10:20

Wall mounting one, not wall mounted but leaning against the wall on counter above the boiler.
It went of repeatedly once, at about 10 o-clock at night. Escaping gas man came right away even though not exactly his remit and checked the boiler. No problems found. Alarm had stopped going off by then. He said that they are very sensitive. Something tiny burning off in the boiler flame could have caused it to produce enough.
Reassuring really.
Now the smoke alarm I have to replace........

We've got a wall mounted CO alarm above our boiler (which is in the kitchen ). It is quite unintrusive, really. Our smoke alarms are separate - one in the downstairs hall and one in the upstairs hall.

Ours is wall mounted in the hall/bottom of stairs so in between the kitchen (boiler) and living room (fire). Has a digital reading which I like and a good warning sound when tested and when batteries need changing.
