Helppppp!! I'm sick of buying socks because I can't seem to keep pairs together EVER!!!! So any tips on how to beat the bloody sock monster that feeds in my washing machine/ laundry pile?

You could buy lots and lots of socks that are all the same, but I find that after different numbers of washes they get faded to different degrees.

lucysmam · 13/04/2009 21:31

you can get those mesh bags from £1 shops, they have a zip on them. Pop socks in, zip up, no more odd socks.

Except I use them for ours & my oh has 2 odd socks this time around!! I'm blaming his gym bag for that one but definately not looking in there for them!

glitterchick · 13/04/2009 22:35

ok. So I am the most disorganised person on the planet but I do have the sock thing down to a tee! Attach top of socks together before washing and chuck into machine. They wash fine and are still together when wash is finished. Keep together when drying and no worries. I have 4 DC and have no prob with matching socks.

glitterchick · 13/04/2009 22:36

Oh forgot to mention that I insist that my DC and DH attach socks together as soon as removed from feet. That is my OCD! My 3 year old even does it. Works out really well.

whomovedmychocolate · 13/04/2009 22:37

Stop being so mean - the socks want to be free. Let them roam.

Seriously I think this is some sort of cosmic balancing. If you can find every single sock your underwires will shoot out your bra and poke you in the eye!

madlentileater · 13/04/2009 22:41

glitterchick....is that really true???
you wash the socks togther and they stay together????
why is this not more widely known?
you may have just changed my life
(large basket of odd socks upstairs)

LackaDAISYcal · 13/04/2009 22:48

pmsl at wmmc

I currently have about 20 odd socks in my possession....where the feck do they go?

like trillian I have tried the lots of pairs the same appraqch, but the slight colour variations when trying to pair them up is too much for my OCD brain and they upset me.

I ball mine up together, and always make sure I have pairs when I do a wash...unfortunately my DH is less enthusiastic about pairing them. Strangely enough though, it's never his blardy socks that go missing!!

Glitterchick is it really that simple? Why is this not known by all? Thats it in the morning I am so having a sock amnesty. WMMC if I leave a few to roam free maybe I won't have to suffer wonky boobs .

I have more odd socks than paired socks in my house. I just wear them anayway even if they're not in pairs, gets slightly embarasing at softplay centres though when you have to take your shoes off and I'm wandering round in odd socks!

RockinSockBunnies · 13/04/2009 23:35

This is my kind of thread!

Seriously, we must have at least 20 single odd socks in this house. Hence the username. We do make them into sock bunnies - stick eyes and ears on them and DD uses them as puppet-like creatures.

There is no way of avoiding it! Socks roam free....

ja9 · 13/04/2009 23:39

i have a peg hanger thing from a pound shop for hanging undies on - do you know the thing i mean? well, i peg up socks in pairs on it. odd ones (that have been seperated from their 'partner') get pegged up on their own and stay there (sometimes for couple of weeks) until the partner sock emerges from the wash...

iyswim!

thumbbunny · 13/04/2009 23:39

My dad safety-pins his socks together in pairs and has done for years (to prevent Mum losing them in the wash).

DH has his own method - he very rarely wears matching socks. In fact he almost goes out of his way to wear mismatched socks (colour wise - they are always a matched type of sock, i.e. thin wool/cotton ones or thick sport socks)

elfinblast · 13/04/2009 23:54

I have a drawer full of odd socks.

I bought my eldest DD when she was about 2 some really fancy socks. After the first 2 or 3 of washes we ended up with 3 solitary socks and no matches. Since then we have cleared and renovated every room in the house. We never found the other socks.

i do tend to buy all the kids socks from the same shop now. Daughters have the same white ankle or knee socks and DS has the same grey ones.

Works for me, although there is ALWAYS a spare one at the end of the wash

SlightlyMadSimnelCake · 14/04/2009 00:01

I saw a cool idea in a friends house. A little shoe box which sits on top of the tumble dryer labelled odd socks. It means that they are less likely to be thrown in draw as a lonely sole and then become lost meaning that it's sole mate becomes an odd sock.

DeathbyDora · 14/04/2009 00:09

Socks sadly do not mate for life it seems!

We also have the 'odd sock' box on top of the dryer. I put ALL the socks in it when I take them out of the dryer and once a week or so (depending on whether everyone has run out of socks...) my dd and I sit down on the floor and match them up.
There are a few stubborn buggers that have been in there since day one though.

BTW does anyone else's husband seems to wear through his socks in record time? All DH's socks look like he's tramped through molten lava on his way back from Tesco...

LackaDAISYcal · 14/04/2009 08:49

We have an odd sock box as well. I keep threatening to go through them and then throw all the unmatched ones away...sadly though, and lucky for the socks, I have never ever made it to the bottom of the laundry pile so worry that I'll throw them away and then all the pairs will turn up .....and DD's fancy socks are the worst culprits! there was one point last summer where we had six socks the same, but all slightly different shades of pink.

Making sock monsters is a great idea though. Will do that today with the DC as it's wet and rainy here.

littleboyblue · 14/04/2009 08:53

I do what glitterchick does and works fine

cikecaka · 14/04/2009 09:23

I have odd sock bags for each of DCs and once a fortnight I go through them, I must have socks in there for 4 yrs but refuse to throw them out in case the match suddenly appears. The fact that they are probably too small for DCs does not come into it1

glitterchick · 14/04/2009 12:54

I pinky swear it works 99% of the time. The trick is train everyone in the house to attach socks together as soon as they are taken off. Occasionally they come apart in the wash but easy to pair up again. I take apart before I hang up on clothes line and reattach before I unpeg. It works. Its that easy. I do believe the trick is to ensure EVERYONE attachs socks together.

allthoseeggsaremine · 14/04/2009 22:49

'little odd sock box'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a WHOLE wicker laundry basket full of the buggers!!

It drives me absolutely mad

monkeypinkmonkey · 15/04/2009 22:39

Well I've started the folding your socks together glitterchick style, only hope it works!!!
Cikecaka I sooo have socks from when DS was a babay that I can't get rid off 'just in case' WTF? they don't fit but otherwise it feels like admitting defeat.
