Do people really put hot stuff in fridges?

A few threads on here seem to refer to home made food being put in the fridge to cool as soon as it's come off the hob! I always thought this was dangerous as it raised the temp of your fridge and would spoil nearby food?
Also the rules about making up formula - that involves putting hot bottles int he fridge, doesn't it?

Well I don't. I let it cool on the side and then put it in. Isn't that normal?
