Is there a spray or something she can use on her furniture?
She got it from a rescue centre and its a lovely wee thing and is loathe to get rid, however she is very house proud and not amused that its shredding her leather couch and wallpaper!
Its got a scratching post and the catnip stuff holds no appeal to her.
Is there any essential oils etc that she can mix up in a spray to deter the cat?

There is a double-sided sticky tape thing that she can stick onto the sofa etc, the cat won't like scratching there and so should stop, whereupon your mother can remove the tape - like this right at the bottom of the page

Or there is a product called Softpaws which is little coloured soft nails you fit over the cat's own claws - good luck with that one!

I got a spray from the local pet shop - I'm sure it had some sort of bitter orange aroma. Anyway my dear old (much lamented) cat who had started to scratch the edge of the sofa stopped when we used this spray on the sofa. It was about £2 and didn't stain the sofa.

Good luck.

My mums cat scratched the brand new carpet to bits.

I bought her a scratch post and she focused all her scratching on this. The carpet was no more an interest to mog.

BUT my blardy mother hated the scratch post saying it looked an eye sore so she got rid of it, and lo and behold the mog is back to clawing up carpet, getting a boot up behind everytime shes caught and is now also being threatened with rehoming - poor thing.

Get cat a scratch post and spray with catnip, and hope your mum isn't as anal as mine!
