i dont understand the idea of a tablet that goes in the wash, washes the clothes, keeps washer scale free during the wash. so after the wash, the water goes out of the machine and then we have a couple of rinses, with clean water that does not contain calgon!!!

Limescale will form faster in hot water - which is why you get coral reefs and ornate conch shells in tropical waters while the UK sea life is a little more mundane.

Based on that, if you can only add one treatment during the wash cycle it will have the biggest effect if it goes into the hotest water - most machines wash warm/hot and rinse cold and so you need the salt in the main wash. I'm guessing that they try and put in sufficient salt that it will also help to remove any limescale that does form during the colder parts of the wash. You can also help by running on the coolest cycle you can.
