Anybody have an "on the hob" type kettle?

Our electric kettle has just conked out. AGAIN. We must have had 5 in the last 7 years. They usually last just over the year so that they're out of guarantee. I'm assuming manufacturers have decided that electric kettles are a "disposable" item, well, either that or I just seek out the crappest kettle in the shop, every time (and it's never the cheapest either. I don't agree that they should be "disposable".

OH and I wondered about getting an on the hob job so that, hopefully, we won't ever have to replace one again.

Will it drive us mad? Will it take too long to boil? If you have one where did you get it?

Can't believe I'm putting this much thought into a kettle....

I had a le cruset one.

tbh I've recently bought an electric one as at least they switch off automatically.
I think you can get ones that whistle when they are boiling. Good idea or otherwise your kitchen ends up full of steam !

I found it took an age to boil.

It definitely takes a bit longer to boil, but as you say, can't really break! I think it also works out a teeny bit cheaper if you have a gas hob.

You can get them in IKEA or Wilkinsons, if you don't fancy shelling out for a le creuset!

I have a stainless steel whistling kettle which I use on a gas hob. Bought it after my 2nd expensive Russel Hobbs stopped working. As long as you dont overfill it I find it boils fairly quickly. There is something quaint about having a whistling kettle I think.

However make sure you get one that has a properly insulated handle. Ours can get fairly hot and means DS cant make me a cup of tea.

i too have a whistling le cruset one.....looks nice but it will drive you bonkers if your wanting a cup of tea quick (we have ours which goes on our old french multi stove for hot water bottles in the evening!)
