would red be too overpowering in a kitchen?

It's just the tops of the walls that want painting, the rest are covered by appliances/cupboards.

The units are beech effect & surfaces are pretty standard I think, beigey kind of speckley patterned bu a bit of a state because I can't get the adhesive the workmen used to tile it off them. The tiles are bright white & my appliances are all silver apart from micro which is being replaced asap to match the rest.

I was thinking a bright-ish red & a few red accessories like pots for my growing herbs.

I want some opinions please, before I go and buy something which I later regret getting

Thanks ladies

oh, forgot to say, the floor is of the cheap laminate variety but looks ok apart from a few scuff marks where the door into the back hall scrapes along it. It's also a kind of beechy colour

Like a pillarbox red? Quite an aggressive colour - but it has to be seen to be commented on ..

lucysmam · 09/03/2009 17:17

maybe not quite that bright but something along those lines

If red's too aggressive, how about cream with red accessories?

& a red Kitchen Aid (if I can talk my oh into buying me one )

I have post box red huge brick effect tiles and they look great.Kitchen is white with oak tops and ceranic grey floor Red is lovely in a kitchen

see, my kitchen's not quite that lovely sounding, I have dreams of a beautiful, stylish kitchen but no way my landlady (although very lovely) could pay for even a new floor atm so wanted to do something to it. I wonder maybe about painting the tiles red & doing the rest cream so it's not so "in your face"

Any thoughts?

Our kitchen was painted red when we bought the house - it's a very big room, pine units, similar sounding worktop to yours, mostly stainless steel appliances.

I found it too much (and it wasn't the brightest red) - a kitchen is cluttered enough without bright walls and I spend lots of time in it - so painted it pale beige/cream and think it looks much better.

Just my opinion

I think I'll go cream with red accessories then, it's fairly big in there but not huge & I don't want to regret doing it & have to paint over it after paying out for red & finding it too much.

Best get searching for some red accessories to go in there . . . .

Thanks ladies

You don't need to paint the whole room. How much light does it get?

daisybaby · 10/03/2009 09:25

We have 3 cream walls, and 1 deep red wall. Cream tiles. It looks really nice - we think!

georgimama · 10/03/2009 09:29

Don't do it.

We once pained our kitchen red - thought it would look warm and cosy.

With our (then) black and white floor tiles it looked like the Nuremberg Rally.

amazonianwoman · 10/03/2009 13:26

Ooo yes, one red wall would work

lucysmam · 10/03/2009 17:29

I like the one wall idea, the only trouble is, the tiles that would normally just be a splashback behind the sink & cooker, extend around the room in a kind of band so not sure hhow it would look. Although, I do have half a tub of deep-ish red paint & some cream lurking around. I could just see what the one wall looks like & if it's bloody awful nick the white my BIL has to paint over it a few timesI guess.

I have a cream walled/beech united kitchen with red accessories..and a fabulous cream and red big flowered blind which is the focal point in the room (from next), it looks lovely! my vote is cream with red accessories.

lucysmam · 10/03/2009 21:23

I like the sound of your blind a lot! I was just going to get a plain bamboo one but I guess if I do cream wit red accessories then I could have a look for something more adventurous. Is it on the Next website to have a nosey at?
