Do attractive place mats exist? Non-washable ones

I'm sick of having to wash place mats after each meal (well, I don't usually but should )

We do need them as have (nice) new table so am still a bit precious about heat causing marks.

But all the wipe clean ones look horrid. I don't want paintings of flowers on them, I don't want DINNER written on them, I don't want black and white photos of Jean Shrimpton on them, I don't want racing green with a gold border.

Do nice ones exist?

Mine are just a photo of stones
like this
which I like and dosn't show up scratches from the kids knives etc.

We had some nice stone shaped ones from debenhams as a wedding gift don't know if they still do them but they are lovely.

charlieandlola · 28/02/2009 20:19

We have welsh slate plate mats and coasters. I use granite cleaner on them.

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 28/02/2009 20:20

x posted mine were actually reconsituted stone (so bit heavy ) but will wear well i hope ( oh and 2 different colours shapes, slightly ireegular)

Wow, 2 responses at same time. And both on a stone/pebble theme. They're not bad QF, could cope with those.

Don't really know what I want. Are ones with photos of kids on very very naff?

Stone is obviously very zeitgeisty in the world of placemats .

Heals do a plain black leather one

I have flowery Laura Ashley cork backed ones

southeastastra · 28/02/2009 20:35

plain leather sounds nice, how about those wicker ones?

QueenFee · 28/02/2009 20:48

Would add that its worth getting the more expensive ones. I had 2 sets given to me as wedding presents. One was Cloverleaf (Very good) and one a non brand. The cloverleaf ones still look new and are much thicker and look better now than the cheaper ones IYSWIM

Woven wicker type things get all clogged up with food IME and are fiddly to clean.

Now have plain leather ones which are much easier.

Tinker · 28/02/2009 23:37

Agree about food in woven ones = not good. Thanks for further things to look into

We have ones from Cath Kidston like this which wipe clean and look nice with a matching wipe-clean oilcloth table cloth. No hassle. No mess. Don't have to look at shabby table underneath. Cheaper than new table and more cheerful.

stealthsquiggle · 02/03/2009 11:50

Plain slate?

castille · 02/03/2009 12:01

Leather is chic, and wipeable.

trixymalixy · 02/03/2009 12:18

we have these ones

Tinker · 04/03/2009 22:59

Thank you all. At least there are some acceptable alternatives out there
