Dull question I know but I can't find my owner's manual anywhere and have no clue how often and how much I'm supposed to put in that hole in the bottom....

can anyone help?

Thanks

Both dishwashers I have had showed a little red light with an S symbol (looked a bit like the S on the Superstars logo) when sal needed replenishing. About monthly I suppose

HeadFairy · 20/02/2009 14:35

whenever I remember, which is only about twice a year.. not very helpful I know. You can buy dishwasher tabs with salt in them, which is helpful for the forgetful among us.

ChopsTheDuck · 20/02/2009 14:35

prob 3/4 times a year, but I don't use my dishwasher daily. I top it up once the dishes stop gettign clean and I remember it!
I jsut shove as much as I can into the hole.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 20/02/2009 14:41

Mine has a warning light too that comes on when it needs re-filling.

There is also a way of changing the setting according to how soft/hard the water area is.

lilQuidditchKel · 20/02/2009 18:13

perhaps that's what that mysterious red light means with the "S" symbol on it

(I always thought it was a symbolic representation of the dishes drying, with hot air radiating off in big swirly "S" shapes)

thank you

I did used to put about a teaspoonful of salt in each time until it was pointed out to me that I needed to fill the container

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 20/02/2009 20:24

About monthly I guess, but we've got a little red light too which helps! It usually takes the whole bag!

EverSOLOlolololoLonely · 21/02/2009 13:05

Whenever the crockery stops being cleaned properly. You just 'know'.
I started using that all in one Fairy stuff, but I still have to add salt and rinse aid as it's useless!

notcitrus · 21/02/2009 13:17

When the light that says 'salt' goes on - although the light for rinse aid is right next to it and when one is on it looks like both are!
About 5 times a year if I use 3 in 1 tablets, or more if the tabs don't have much salt (live in London, v hard water).

Geepers · 21/02/2009 13:28

I have never used salt in my dishwasher. I wouldn't know where to put it. I just use dishwasher tabs. I didn't think you needed salt with them?

Must confess to having never read the manual though

EverSOLOlolololoLonely · 21/02/2009 14:05

Geepers! you must live in a soft water area surely?

ohdearwhatamess · 21/02/2009 14:13

Probably about once a month (when the light comes on). I put in about a third of a bag. Hardwater area, disherwasher used 2 or 3 times a day.

PenelopePitstops · 21/02/2009 14:19

i've never used it either!

i always thought it was one of those things that you didnt really need, like fabric softener

Geepers · 21/02/2009 14:51

I live in a very hard water area. What difference will it make? My d/w is always sparkly and everyting comes out clean.

EverSOLOlolololoLonely · 21/02/2009 15:24

I'm impressed! I use the 3 in 1 Fairy tabs and salt and rinse aid. I'm being robbed! Very hard water here too.

ThingOne · 21/02/2009 16:19

I fill it up when the dishes come out grainy. I live in a very hard water area too. But it's all academic as the bloody thing is bust and I can't afford a new one atm!

Flibbertyjibbet · 21/02/2009 16:32

I've never put salt in. Very soft water area. Currently on lidl dishwasher tabs which were about £2 for 30 .

DP says the salt thing is for hard water areas to make the detergent part of the dishwasher tabs work better.

You know, like us in soft water areas get much more bubbles from our bubble bath and use much less detergent in the washing machine/shampoo on our heads.

nooka · 21/02/2009 16:48

I lived in London, and used 4 in one tabs and no salt or rinse aid. My machine had a little switch to turn the indicators off. Here in Canada they don't seem to sell salt that I've noticed, so we haven't yet added any.

Sophie19836 · 17/12/2018 08:54

Hi there the difference the salt makes is this in hard water areas limescale is present in water over time this can damage dishwashers like limescale in kettles putting salt in dishwasher is for the water softener unit as the salt functions for ion exchange there by softening the water and eliminating limescale

CantWaitToRetire · 17/12/2018 09:30

Salt gets replenished when the warning light comes on, which is about every 6-8 weeks I guess. It's the rinse aid that seems to need filling up really often. I use my DW once a day.

LambChopsMcGee · 01/01/2019 07:42

I've never put salt in mine... Where do I get the salt? Is it in the dish washing aisle at the supermarket?

I'm so ignorant of these things!
