Recycling shoes

I have just emptied the shoes box and found about 5 pairs of ds' outgrown shoes, aswell as a couple of pairs of my own that I no longer wear. Ds' aren't really fit for use anymore and I was wondering if the recycling bins outside some shoe shops are for shoes to be worn again or if they're stripped down and turned into something else? ie. Can I put his manky-not-fit-for-wearing shoes in there or do they have to go into the rubbish?

Our salvation army collects shoes - so I put our OK ones in there, the rest to the tip, but don't know what happens to them.
