what colour should I paint the kitchen?

Our kitchen has white walls, pale grey marble effect tiled floor and beige work surfaces - all these are in good condition and I can live with them. The cupboards are wooden, stained quite dark and nice enough BUT we needed extra space so we have built some more on the cheap which obviously don't match so ne to pull it all together we are planning to paint the new ones and the old ones all the same, so it won't look such a mishmash.

So, what colour?

I like the idea of white but think it will look a bit weird perhaps.

We haven't got any money for any fancy accessories or to make some sort of a theme, and I can't afford to get this wrong - would you go for something bold and bright or stick to white or beige?

Any ideas would be happily received!

A sage green looks nice and theres a good Farrow and Ball one though cant remember what its called - we painted our kitchen cupboards with it.

I would then get some fancy handles/knobs as well to tie it all together.

Cooking apple green?

giantkatestacks · 10/02/2009 19:33

having looked it up - I do like that one MrsSB but I think it was Card Room Green. More bluey.

God could there be a more middle class conversation [shakes head at self]

I am just going to go and put on something from Boden before I continue with this conversation.......

Salmon pink

Shitemum · 10/02/2009 20:15

Why cant you just stain the new ones the same shade as the old ones?
Painting cabinets is hard to get right unless you get them sprayed proffesionally...

Flocci · 10/02/2009 20:16

PDM - really? Isn't that a bit bright? Have you got a bright pink kitchen?

The new units are MDF and wood and look so crap that they need painting over to improve them.Is painting cabinets really hard? i thought it was just going to be a splosh of primer and paint?

No I haven't, but my parents have and it really warms up their North facing kitchen

Flocci · 10/02/2009 20:34

Hmmmmm I see. Our kitchen is currently quite cold so maybe a warm colour is what's needed then. Hmmm. Interesting

Of course it doesn't help that dh is sat behind me suggesting comedy colour names which he thinks are vastly amusing. He doesn't get how big a decision this is for me. I don't think he would notice if I painted every inch of the walls floor and ceiling bright pink TBH.

we found painting the outside of the cabinets ok tbh with primer and expensive paint - get the right sort obv. The insides were trickier but we didnt mask them properly

even if its slightly less than perfect it would presumably look better than your mix and match mdf you've got going on.

to get rid of the cold i would put some warmer pictures up etc

harpomarx · 10/02/2009 21:11

rofl at 'warmer pictures' - a nice hearth scene? or 'old man with chestnut brazier'?

giantkatestacks · 10/02/2009 21:16

yes...that sort of thing...

giantkatestacks · 10/02/2009 21:17

actually I have a photo of icecream in mine so maybe I was attempting to make it cooler...good grief.

harpomarx · 10/02/2009 21:30

if it works for you gks then there's nothing to be ashamed of - being so susceptible to visual suggestion probably saves you a fortune in heating/airconditioning...

MrsSeanBeanIsEmployable · 10/02/2009 21:32

Painting units is easy. It must be, DH did it.

Flocci · 12/02/2009 20:47

Thanks ladies - I have decided to paint it all white ....bear with me ..... because I just love plain white .... BUT if it is a bit too cold and weird, which I can see it might be, then I will leave all the units white and paint the walls cooking apple green.
