How do I make my washing smell nice??

When I buy baby clothes from ebay, 90% of the time they come smelling gorgeous (a really nice homely sort of smell that reminds me of being a child!) - and I can't stop snuggling up to my DS and smelling him all day the first few times I put him in them!

Then I wash them myself and they smell nice when they first come out of the washing machine but the smell seems to wear off really quickly and they just smell like nothing

What am I doing wrong? I started using fabric conditioner but it didn't help. DS has not got sensitive skin at all so that is not a problem.

I bet they still smell nice at your house, you just can't smell your own, familiar, 'home smell' because you;re so used to it.

Do you tumble dry them?

I find mine only keep the nice smell if I dry them on the line or clothe horse

I think it depends what fabric conditioner you use. My clothes never used to smell of anything either. Most of the concentrated ones are good at leaving a nice smell behind.

its probably because they are washed in different wash powder/softener. if i ever use a dif wash powder i can always really smell it on my clothes (something i hate actually) but i can't smell the normal one, your nose gets used to it.

BuckBuck, we haven't got a tumble drier, everything is dried on an airer or radiators at the moment, clothes line in the summer but we haven't lived here that long yet.

I usually buy a different washing powder every time we go shopping so I don't know if different powder is the answer either! Have only recently started using the conditioner though, so will try out some different brands.

I always found that the washing smelled nice when it came out of the machine but by the time we put the clothes on they smelled of - nothing.
By mistake I picked up a bottle of the newish Bold 2 in 1 Concentrated Power liquid. I am really impressed. Fragrance remains after washing, tumbling, ironing and storing for a few days. It is more expensive but I am not using fabric conditioner or even tumble drier sheets (no problem with static).
It is lovely putting on dd's school shirts and getting a waft of lavender and camomile 5 days after ironing them.
And no, I don't work for Proctor & Gamble, I hate some of their other products.
(But I'd also bear in mind that the ebay sellers might be giving the clothes a good squirt with something as they're wrapping them!)

Oooh, am I allowed to mention the exact product like that?
Sorry, MN Towers.
