Advice re cleaning singed carpet off iron, please

Husband dropped the iron onto the carpet, and the fibres melted onto the iron in a black mess, which has now been impossible to shift. I don't want to scrape it and damage the surface, as the iron was brand new (of course!) Any advice as to how to deal with this?

I would warm it up slightly on a low setting, then use a plastic scourer. Try Bar Keepers friend, a non abrasive powder which brings most metal things up like new
