my neighbour told me last night that it's more economical to leave your hot water on all the time rather than for a few hours in the morning and a few hours in the afternoon. Is this true?

I wouldn't think so.

see i didn't think so either but her explanation did make sense, apparantly it costs more to heat the water from cold rather than maintain the constant temp.

that is true that it is cost less to heat water from cold, however maintaining water temp also costs due to it cooling and having to be reheated constantly to maintain the temperature.
so dont think it would make much difference really.

In fact, I'm sure an electronics geeky expert friend of DH advised us to just put the water on in the mornings for a couple of hours and that should heat it enough to be sufficient for our needs throughout the day. Then, put it on again in the evening for bathing requirements.

Don't think you need a tank-full of piping hot water constantly for normal day-to-day use.

A tradesman told me its supposed to work out about the same so most people leave theirs on constant.. dont know how true that is but i do keep mine on.

i only put mine on a few hours in morning and a few in afternoon...was just being nosey really (and obviously tring to save a few quid!)
