Wise advice please! Need to carpet my stairs

Hall floor is oak, so needs to go ok with that. Walls are cream. What sort of carpet should I go for - I know there are different types, but they mean nothing to me! What wears best? What colour? Does anyone have a fantastic sale on at the moment? Please help - really don't want to make a mistake on this

We have oak hall floor and cream walls too, and we have gone for a warm-brown textured wool carpet.

I've always quite fancied a natural floorcovering on the stairs like sisal or jute or something, but been a bit put off in case they are ncomfortable underfoot?

Opps, this thread wasn't here a minute ago, so I posted again. Thanks for your reply. What exactly is 'textured wool'?
I know what you mean about jute - I'm not convinced about how it would feel...

Any other opinions on my carpet - I know there are more interesting things to talk about on a Sat night, but I still need help

It's a wool carpet but it is twisted in different ways, kind of in a repeating square pattern...sorry, that desn't make much sense.

It's not completely plain, it's got some sort of self-coloured pattern in it so it is hardwearing because it hides marks, flattened bits etc.

Dont be tempted by the light natural colours. We got a light taupe and it was wrecked in months - filthy. Also my parents have got sisal and it is so rough on kids knees/feet/hands etc (and adults).

Carpet Right sale has finished I think but a friend is a manager and he says they have authorisation to give you up to 30% discount so keep haggling!

My personal advice is to avoid a berber carpet. They're really hard to vacuum properly as the dust gets trapped in the "weave" IYKWIM and doesn't hoover out. We've had our stairs and landing carpet for 3 years and I've been very dissappointed in it. It was 100% wool and was expensive but it never looks clean to me. We're going to replace it with a wool loop pile (i.e. traitional) carpet, perhaps a twist with speckles to be more forgiving on the eye). We were advised against sisal or jute as we have steep stairs and small children, and it can be slippy.
