I've heard great things about the Bissell ones....or, you can hire them from DIY shops - £25 for a weekend...worth it if you only want to shampoo once a year or so...

I personally have a Vax one...its okayish providing the carpets are not that grubby to start with and it doesn't seem to make much difference to the high traffic areas. Wish had gone for a Bissell now btw

I have a vax, the second one and it seems to have done a pretty good job judging by the sheer amount of stuff that came out of our carpets at the weekend. The stairs thing is great. My parents have a George who is very good. George uses a lot more cleaning fluid than the Vax though. We did the 2 rooms, hall and stairs and used half a tank of cleaning fluid.

We've got a Bissel 9400. It was a bit pricey, but as our house has beige carpets throughout and we have a toddler and 2 cats, its fab to be able to clean the carpets in the high stain areas every few months. It's made an amazing difference

I have this VAX:

www.vax.co.uk/shop/multifunction-vacuum-cleaners/Vax-6131

It's great. It was about £150 and is worth its weight in gold. The colour of the dirty water makes you realise how grubby your carpets can get.
