Flower Arranging - What can I use for topiary stems?

I am just buying some supplies but am not sure what I can use for a topiary stem - well, it's a ball of fresh flowers on a stick like topiary. Is there something I can buy, or do I have to make something up? All I can think of is bamboo cane painted darker brown.

Thanks so much if you can help!

Dowelling?
Broom handle?

What thickness?

Not quite sure, the Oasis' are 16cm and 20cm so whatever would be on scale to that - about 2cm diameter? Broom handle - good idea! May be a little thick, will have to see... plus i'd need a few brooms, I have 12 to make

B&Q/Homebase sell dowelling in a variety of widths in about 2.4m lengths
