Please tell me about dehumidifiers - and recommend what sort to buy

Our house is quite old (in parts) with solid walls, and good double glazing, and so tends to be pretty damp. Despite leaving windows open most of the day, we have mould growing on some walls, and clothes in the fitted wardrobe in our room are mildewy .

I think we need a dehumidifier - would one big one be best, or 2 smaller ones, one for upstairs and one for downstairs? Any particular brands or features to go for or avoid? Thanks.

HI JackieNo, nice to be able to recommend something to you for a change (rather than the other way round!)
Can definately recommend this model which we have in our basement
www.johnlewis.com/230428592/Product.aspx
Is light, easy to use and has automatic shut off, is also v quiet and can even be used to helop dry your laundry. Good price too I thought.

Thanks Pannacotta. I'd looked at those - I suspect the automatic shut off is a good idea - do you leave yours running all day every day, or just put it on occasionally?

We use it as and when but its not too damp. I think all day every day might dry the air out a bit too much.
You can usually set dehumidifiers for a certain time eg 4/8 hours etc which might work for you.
I think this one is very efficient having used them before.

Oh and I'd get two smaller rather than one large, will be more effective I woudl have thought. You coudl always ask for advice in local John Lewis?

Fab - thanks for that, Pannacotta. I think we'd struggle with one, as our house is more of a long, narrow rectangle than a square, iyswim, so it would be difficult to find somewhere to place it where it could sort both ends of the house.

we bought this one

definitely get 2 - we run ours as and when required to deal with our damp office really helps

Thank you murphyslaw - looks like delonghi is the make to go for.
