How do you get/keep your floors properly clean?

I'm sick to death of them. No matter how much I clean the DC end up with filthy feet just from walking around.

We have oak floors in the living rooms and hallways, slate in the kitchen, rubber in the bathroom and bamboo in the bedrooms.

My main bug bear is a pure wool 'shag' rug in the DC's room , a well meaning present but it sheds so much.

I tend to hoover every other day, then use a manhatten mop to get dust up and a microfibre cloth over a cheapy sponge mop every other day. But it's still filthy.

My MIL swears it's because we are in London and keep windowsopen as often as possible. Can grit from the air really make that much filth?

Help

I'm not really keen on the slate tbh, though ours isn't smooth, and like pgwithno3 above it catches and hangs onto every bit of dirt, I'd go with something smoother, though not too smooth for bathrooms!

No shoes makes a big difference.

I have karndean in the hall & kitchen which isn't too bad at all, vacuum once a week, twice if visitors are coming . Occasionally I'll wash it but to remember when that was.

The aroma of wet carpet currently wafting through lounge & dining room as just bisselled them.

Am tempted by an irobot though!
