The ones you see in homebase etc?? I have a bissel but it is rubbish. Do i fork out on getting carpet professionaly done or hire one of the above? The carpet isnt very old but has alot of stains that just wont shift.

I've hired one from Homebase a few times and always been really pleased - if pleased is the right word for bucket loads of black water coming out of your carpet . They've never not shifted a stain and have attachments for the edges etc.

Is the one you're talking about red? I can't remember what it's called- Dirt Devil maybe? Anyway I've hired one before and thought it was fab, I'd definitely recommend.

do you remember how much it cost? Waiting for a quote from prof company. Also did it leave carpet wet? Did it get old stains?

Its a RugDoctor and I use them twice a year. Very effectively. IIRC, it was £21 forme to hire, which included enough shampoo for the stairs and landing and a 20ft sq living room. The carpets are slightly damp for a couple of hours, so if you can avoid walking on them, it's best to. You need to take 2 forms of ID with your address on and you can hire them for any length of time, but I usually get just a 24hr hire.

is rug doctor what you get from homebase? Does it get rid of old stains>?

I hired the rug doctor one, it did get loads of dirt out of my carpet but cost quite a bit and didn't get rid of any of the stains.

MaureenMLove · 12/08/2008 19:55

That's a shame Pucca. Yes, it is the one you hire from Homebase. I didn't think it was too expensive either and it did get out an old stain on the landing carpet. I won't go into what the stain was, for fear of blackening the good name of my paraletically drunk DH that night! I scrubbed that stain for weeks, but it kept coming back. The Rugdoctor took it out first time.

We have a VAX one, well, it's the landlord's, and we're really impressed. It works great.

Rug Doctor- that's it! I was so impressed with it, I looked into buying our own but iirc they were around £500!
